A Brief Summary of the Buffalo Soldiers

Shortly after the Civil War, Congress authorized the formation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiment: Six all Black peacetime units. Later the four infantry regiments were merged into the 24th and 25th Infantries. The 10th Cavalry was formed at Fort Leavenworth under the leadership of Colonel Benjamin Gierson. The 9th Cavalry was formed in New Orleans, Louisiana by Colonel Edward Hatch. During their campaign in Texas, Buffalo Soldiers served at virtually every military post on the Texas frontier, from Fort Brown at Brownsville, to Fort Sill just across the Red River, to Fort Quitman on the Rio Grande in the far western part of Texas. Not long after their first encounter with the Native American tribes, the African-American troops received the name by which they are best known"The Buffalo Soldiers." They were reportedly so named because the Native American Indians likened the soldiers' hair with the hair of the sacred buffalo and also the soldier's courage and strength to that of the buffalo, a sacred symbol to all of the tribes.
